Employee resource groups, or ERGs, are voluntary groups within a company where employees who share common characteristics or interests come together to support each other and promote workplace inclusion. ERGs are important in human resources because they help build community, improve engagement, and foster a supportive culture. They fit within the employee lifecycle by enhancing inclusion and retention efforts, often complementing broader diversity strategies.
Typical ERGs include groups focused on race, ethnicity, and culture, women’s networks, LGBTQ+ communities, disability and mental health support groups, as well as groups for veterans and parents. Each type addresses specific needs and fosters belonging among its members.
ERGs are usually supported by human resources but led by employees themselves. They organise meetings, events, and mentoring programs and often collaborate with leadership on diversity initiatives. These groups can also provide feedback on policies and contribute to a positive workplace culture.
